Another day, another chance to choose

Everything can be taken from a man or a woman but one thing: the last of human freedoms to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. -Viktor E. Frankl
A friend’s situation reminded me of how we – and by “we” I mean especially women – sometimes don’t even know our own way. We are programmed to please others, to look at ourselves through the lens of others, and to try to conform to their needs and expectations. Here’s the kicker: we can’t totally discount the expectations of others – that would un-socialize us, really. We all need the checks and balances of outside perspectives. Yet, we must be true to ourselves too. But not so much we turn into one of those yutzes who says, “I think if we’re going to continue dating, it has to be an open relationship because I’m going through a  selfish time right now.”  Where the balance is in serving humanity without draining yourself dry is probaby a moving target.
